Invisible letters

3 - 4 years
Mother and child painting

This activity will help your preschooler start to recognise letters and prepare them for school!

What you need

  • Paper
  • A white crayon or candle
  • Watercolour paint (or water mixed with acrylic paint, or food colouring)
  • Paint brush

What to do

  • Using the crayon or a candle, write a letter on a piece of paper (the first letter of your child’s name is a good place to start).
  • Encourage your child to paint a square over the “invisible letter” with the paint.
  • As the paint dries, the invisible letter will be revealed. Talk about the letter's shape, the sound that it makes, and words that start with it.

Look, now we can see the round 'O'. O for Oliver, Oscar and orange! Would you like to have a turn?

This is a great way for your preschooler to practice all the letters of their name.
