Everyday ways to help your child with numeracy
Children filling bottles to create patterns

Art and craft is a lovely way for your child to develop an understanding of the important number concept of patterns. You can help by talking about the patterns, for example:

  • suggesting patterns

Can you make a pattern around the border? How about a thin line, then a circle, then another line?
  • noticing and working out patterns

Let me see if I can work out the pattern in your necklace. Three blue, two purple, three blue, two purple...
  • asking what comes next in the pattern

What bead do you need next?
  • drawing attention to patterns in the world around you

Did you notice the pattern in the house numbers? 12, 14, 16, 18 ... they're going up by two!
