Everyday ways to help your child with literacy and numeracy
Parents and children cutting out shapes

Art and craft are based on shapes, colours, sizes and patterns, so they're a great way to reinforce these maths concepts and vocabulary.

When your child is absorbed in what they're doing, don't interrupt their creative process! But when they finish, talk about some of the following as you praise their creation:

  • colours

    That’s a lovely red.

Look what happens when the blue and yellow mix together, isn't that pretty?
  • shapes

What a long rectangle, that must have been tricky!

    That triangle is very narrow.
  • sizes and positions

The big monster is much scarier than the little one!

That's a beautiful bird on top of the house.
  • patterns

I like the pattern in your border: square, circle, square, circle, square.

What a colourful stripe pattern: red, blue, red, blue, red!
